Pursuing MS in Animal & Dairy Science - Major Professor:Dr. Joe W West
Personal and Professional Background
Currently in my second year as a master's student, I moved to Tifton to conduct research with dairy cattle, my primary agricultural interest. I am also interested in low-input farming and overseas development. Dairy was an interest I fell into while getting my BS in Animal Science at Berry College in Rome, Ga. It was there that I began working at the dairy as an inroad to vet school, but quickly changed my mind and pursued the dairy business. After college I moved to the middle of Ohio Amish country where I managed a grass-based dairy until I later moved back to the University of Georgia.
During these years of working on the dairy I often gave tours, usually to school age children who were eager to know how the farm works, where the milk comes from, etc. Farming in particular involves all areas of general science, so I often had the opportunity to incorporate their classroom lessons into the tour. These opportunities confirmed my interest in teaching, and so I returned to the University of Georgia to pursue my master degree where I was a TA for several classes.
Being a part of the SBOF program is an excellent opportunity to share my enthusiasm for science, learn new ways to convey this enthusiasm, and pursue my own interest in one day teaching.
