Pursuing Ph.D. in Food Science - Major Professor:Dr. Hung

Personal and Professional Background

I am a 24 year old native of Cleveland, OH. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology (minor in chemistry). One of my primary goals in life is to successfully obtain a Doctoral degree in food science. However, my educational objectives have not overshadowed my desire to work with youth. While working as an Advanced Space Camp counselor at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, I learned the significance of combining science with pure high quality fun.

My most memorable experiences with youth were gained while volunteering as a teacher's assistant for an after school program with under-privileged second graders. These experiences were further amplified while serving as Educational Director at a local Boys and Girls Club. While serving in these positions, I learned the importance of building fundamental concepts of math, reading, and science in the minds of children. Implementation of these foundations were proven successful when students began to grasp a greater understanding of complex material more easily and efficiently.

My career objective is to strive to extend my accomplished education in science and research to youth in academia. Involvement in "The Science Behind Our Food" Fellowship is an opportunity to do so. Personally, "I love children and I love science". My satisfaction comes in knowing that I have participated in the educational betterment of youth through the creation of innovative scientific learning tools. Hopefully in the future, I will have another opportunity to exercise my scientific expertise to educate others in my career of choice.
