   Subject:  Physics, Chemistry

Personal and Professional Background

My name is Vicki Sherling. My husband, Mike, and I have two sons: Aaron, 29 and Mark, 25. I received my B.S. degree in Zoology from UGA and my MasterĂ¢s degree from VSC (now VSU).

I have been teaching the physical sciences, mostly physics and chemistry, for 28 years. I am a great believer in "hands on" and "practical" learning experiences. I have always been involved with activities such as science bowl, science Olympics, and science fair. In the last few years I have become very active in the Georgia Elective Vehicle education program. Last year, my second year chemistry students and I became certified volunteers for the Georgia Adopt A Stream program.

Recent budget cuts had me concerned about the feasibility of continuing the outstanding Adopt A Stream program at our school. I originally became interested in this Institute as a means of continuing that excellent program next year. The information I have been given about the content of the program sounds exciting on many levels and I am looking forward to finding ways to incorporate the program into our curriculum. I hope to be able to obtain information for our biology teacher as well. She was unable to attend this Institute.
